Escalante
River, Utah Update:
By
Chuck & Nancy Bagley
In 2005 we
reported on our trip down the Escalante River, Utah. We took a full-sized
canoe (not recommended!) from the hiway 12 bridge down to Lake Powell, and wrote
it up in a 10 page report, an abridgement of which appeared in Canews.
THE RIVER HAS CHANGED! We have just learned from a friend in Utah
that a flash flood in 2006 has considerably altered many rapids.
There are now at least 3 portages, instead of one, and new rockfall into
the river has made rapids more difficult. Phil Nelson of Green River
(435-564-3595) just ran the river in an inflatable, and feels that over-all it
is now class II-III. We suggest calling Phil before trying the Escalante.

The River Safety Council, which includes representative members of Paddle Trails Canoe Club, American Whitewater, Washington Kayak Club, Mountaineers and Downstream River Runners, sponsored a table at the Salmon Recovery Funding Board Conference April 15 & 16. After learning that the Salmon Recovery Funding Board (SRF Board) funded salmon recovery projects that incorporated LWD in rivers and streams, but did not review them for river user safety, the RSC decided to try to reach project designers directly.
